Rebirthing Breathwork: What Beginners Should Know About This Transformational Practice
Introduction: The Power of Breath to Transform
Breathwork has become one of the most powerful tools in modern wellness, a practice that helps people reconnect with their bodies, regulate their nervous systems, and access profound emotional healing. While many breathwork styles exist, Rebirthing Breathwork holds a special place as one of the most transformative and heart-opening modalities available.
Whether you're completely new to breathwork or exploring deeper healing practices, Rebirthing Breathwork, now also taught as Yin Breathwork, offers a gentle, powerful, and emotionally safe approach to personal transformation.
In this blog, we’ll explore:
-
What Rebirthing Breathwork is
-
Its origins and the legacy of Leonard Orr
-
What you can expect from a session
-
Benefits of the practice
-
How it's evolved into Yin Breathwork
-
And how I’m now offering this experience in Sydney through a small-group workshop called Re-Awakening

What Is Rebirthing Breathwork?
Rebirthing Breathwork is a conscious breathing technique that uses a gentle, connected breath to activate the body’s natural healing processes. It’s designed to release suppressed emotions, reduce inner tension, and reconnect you to a deeper sense of self.
The method involves breathing in a relaxed, continuous rhythm, without pausing between the inhale and exhale. Over time, this creates a meditative, altered state of consciousness that allows old emotional patterns, memories, and energy blocks to surface and be released.
Unlike more intense breathwork styles (like Wim Hof Method or Breakthrough Breathwork), Rebirthing is soft, slow, and deeply internal, ideal for emotional integration, nervous system healing, and reconnecting to the subtle intelligence of the breath.
The Origins of Rebirthing Breathwork: Leonard Orr’s Legacy
The roots of Rebirthing Breathwork date back to the 1970s, when American spiritual teacher Leonard Orr began experimenting with breath control during meditation. Through his own breathwork practice, often in the bath or during deep contemplation, Orr experienced spontaneous emotional releases and flashes of insight that felt like rebirths.
He discovered that the connected breath (where you inhale and exhale without pause) had the power to release unconscious tension and bring about emotional, physical, and even spiritual renewal.
Orr believed that birth trauma, suppressed memories, and emotional wounds were stored in the body and could be accessed and healed through the breath. His method became known as Rebirthing, and over the years, it spread around the world, evolving through different facilitators, lineages, and adaptations.
Orr’s core mission was to offer breath as a tool for the transformation of humanity, one breath at a time.

What Happens in a Rebirthing Breathwork Session?
If you're new to rebirthing, a typical session looks like this:
1. Opening & Intention Setting
The session begins with a short grounding practice, intention setting, and an explanation of the technique.
2. Conscious Connected Breathing
You’ll lie down and begin breathing in a gentle, flowing rhythm, with guidance from a facilitator who holds space and may offer subtle coaching, touch, or energy work to help support your process.
3. Release & Integration
As the breath activates emotional energy, you may feel physical sensations, tingling, warmth, or waves of emotion. These are part of the body's natural process of release. The session ends with deep rest, reflection, and integration.
4. Sound & Support
In my sessions, I incorporate sound healing with crystal bowls and gongs as well as bodywork to enhance emotional safety and deepen the process.

What Are the Benefits of Rebirthing Breathwork?
Rebirthing Breathwork is not just about relaxation, it creates space for emotional, energetic, and psychological transformation. Here are some of the most common benefits reported:
-
Release of suppressed emotions and trauma
-
Reduced anxiety, depression, and mental tension
-
Greater clarity and emotional resilience
-
Nervous system regulation and improved sleep
-
Reconnection to one’s authentic self and life purpose
-
Deep inner peace and emotional freedom
It’s a truly whole-body experience, supporting your emotions, breath, energy, and mind in resetting and releasing what no longer serves you.
Yin Breathwork: The Evolution of Rebirthing
As the breathwork world has grown, many facilitators have adapted and refined Rebirthing Breathwork into more trauma-informed, accessible formats. One of the most powerful evolutions is what’s now known as Yin Breathwork, developed and taught by Suntara.
Yin Breathwork follows the same foundational principles as Rebirthing: gentle, connected breathing; emotional integration; and a soft, safe container. However, it’s even more focused on nervous system safety, emotional pacing, and creating space for the subtleties of healing to arise without force.
This method is often paired with sound healing, ceremonial intention, and presence, helping people feel safe enough to surrender and soften into transformation.

My Journey With Yin Breathwork
In April 2025, I completed my Yin Breathwork (Rebirthing) Facilitator Training with Suntara, a program that honours the original teachings of Leonard Orr while evolving them into a form that meets people where they are, gently, lovingly, and powerfully.
This training brought a whole new layer of depth to my facilitation. I’ve spent years working with the breath through various modalities, from performance-based breathing and cold immersion to deep ceremonial (Breakthrough Breathwork) breath journeys, but Yin Breathwork invited me into a space of true softness.
It helped me understand that sometimes the most powerful release doesn’t come from effort, it comes from surrender.
Introducing: Re-Awakening – Yin Breathwork & Sound Healing in Sydney
To honour this lineage and share this powerful modality with my community, I’ve created a new workshop offering in Sydney called:

This is a 2.5-hour, small-group workshop (max 8 people) designed to:
-
Guide you through a conscious connected breathing journey

Re-Awakening is not about fixing or forcing. It’s about remembering who you are, and letting the breath guide you home. This workshop is intentionally limited to a maximum of 8 participants to create an intimate, safe, and supportive space for deep healing and authentic connection.

Final Thoughts: Breath As A Gateway Back to Self
Rebirthing Breathwork has changed thousands of lives — including mine. It offers a simple, yet powerful invitation: what if your breath held the key to your healing?
In a world that often pushes us to go faster, harder, and louder, Yin Breathwork invites us to slow down, soften, and listen. And in that space, transformation happens.
If you're ready to begin or deepen your breathwork journey, I invite you to join me for Re-Awakening, a workshop that honours the breath, the body, and your ability to reset and reconnect to yourself.
